Measuring impact sound insulation, requires a standardised impact sound generator [tapping machine] to be used. Consisting of hammers of standardised weight that drop from a standard height at a standard repetition rate [frequency].
The vibration from the tapping machine is transmitted through the building structure into the air in the receiving room. This sound level (L2) is measured and compared to building regulation after correction for reverberation time (T2) and possible influence of background noise (B2).
The Bruel & Kjaer 3207 is an impact sound generator, for impact sound measurements to national and international standards BS EN ISO 140 and BS EN ISO 717
It uses 5 hammers each weighing 500 g and dropping from a height of 40 mm every two seconds, giving an operating frequency of 10 Hz. The hammers are operated by tappets on a single shaft, which is driven by a DC motor.
Three extendable legs with rubber feet support the unit during operation. The height of the rubber feet is adjustable - gauge supplied, which gives stable and level operation in accordance with the standards.

We are sometimes asked for Tapping Machines with UKAS certificates. Currently there are no organizations able to issue UKAS certificates for tapping machines. However the relevant standard simply calls for 5 hammers each weighing 500 g and dropping from a height of 40 mm every two seconds so we have an in-house test which checks these parameters, before and after each hire.
