Sound Intensity Measurement, Meters and Probes

Sound intensity measurements have several useful applications. Sound intensity probes are directional, so you can isolate and measure noise sources in reverberant noise fields, i.e. factories, plant rooms etc. For example you can 'rank' various sources of noise from a pump attached to an electric motor or gearbox.

Using sound intensity techniques you can make building acoustics measurements, look for flanking transmission paths or acoustic leaks. You can also use sound intensity for sound power measurements

Sound level meter microphones are omnidirectional, by design, so the traditional measurement of sound power involved expensive anechoic or fully reverberant room. Sound intensity probes, on the other hand, enable you to derive the sound power from the measured sound intensity of a noise source in the work place *.

Sound intensity power measurements generally fall into two categories, the survey and the precision method - see BS EN ISO 9614

Note * It is assumed that the noise source does not absorb any acoustic energy from the sound field. This is fulfilled when the source is made of acoustically reflective materials - most cases. It can also be shown that the influence from sources outside the measurement surface then can be excluded.
